This is a common question we hear from parents.
At first glance, it seems like an odd connection. If a child is struggling to communicate, shouldn’t therapy focus entirely on speech?
Fair enough…. And the answer begins with understanding what speech actually is.
Most of us think of speaking as something that happens with the mouth. We picture words forming on the lips or sounds being made with the tongue. But speaking is far more complex than that. It is one of the most sophisticated motor skills the human brain ever learns, requiring countless systems throughout the body to work together with remarkable precision.
At Heal Thyself Institute, we don’t simply ask, “Why isn’t this child talking?” Instead, we ask, “What does this child’s brain need in order to make communication easier?”
Sometimes, the answer begins long before the first word.
Speaking Starts Long Before the First Word
Long before babies ever say “mama” or “dada,” their brains are busy building the foundation for communication.
During the first year of life, babies learn to lift their heads, roll over, sit independently, crawl, pull to stand, and eventually walk. These milestones aren’t just exciting moments for parents, they’re opportunities for the nervous system to organize itself through movement.
Every time a baby reaches for a toy, shifts their weight, or explores their environment, the brain receives valuable sensory information. It learns where the body is in space, how muscles work together, and how to coordinate increasingly complex movements.
These experiences may not look like speech, but they’re preparing the brain for it.
Development happens in layers. Before the brain can coordinate the incredibly precise movements required for speech, it first has to learn how to organize the larger movements of the body.
Speech Is a Whole Body Skill
It’s easy to think of speech as something that only involves the mouth, but communication depends on far more than the lips and tongue.
To produce even a simple sentence, the brain must coordinate posture, breathing, muscle tone, eye movements, hearing, attention, timing, and dozens of tiny muscles throughout the face, jaw, and neck, all within fractions of a second.
If one part of that system is working harder than it should, communication can become more difficult.
That doesn’t necessarily mean something is “wrong.” It simply means the nervous system may be working less efficiently than it could.
This is one of the reasons our providers spend so much time looking beyond speech itself. We want to understand how the entire nervous system is functioning because communication doesn’t happen in isolation.
Why Movement Matters
Children learn through movement.
Before they can explain the world with words, they experience it through their bodies. Crawling across the living room, climbing at the playground, balancing on one foot, spinning, jumping, and reaching all provide important information to the brain.
Movement is one of the primary ways the nervous system develops.
Each new movement challenges the brain to process sensory information, improve coordination, and build stronger connections between different regions of the nervous system. Over time, these experiences help create the foundation for more advanced skills, including communication.
This is why movement often becomes part of our treatment sessions.
To an observer, balancing on a foam pad or throwing beanbags may not seem connected to speech. To the brain, however, these activities provide meaningful sensory input that supports organization, coordination, and motor control.
Every activity has a purpose.
Balance Is About More Than Standing Still
Balance is often thought of as a physical skill, but it’s also a neurological one.
The vestibular system, located within the inner ear, constantly sends information to the brain about movement, head position, and spatial awareness. That information influences posture, muscle tone, eye movements, coordination, and the brain’s ability to maintain attention.
These systems don’t work independently. They communicate continuously.
When we challenge balance in a safe, individualized way, we’re not simply asking a child to stand on one foot. We’re providing the brain with an opportunity to process and organize information that supports many other areas of development.
Breathing, Stability, and Communication
Something as automatic as breathing plays a surprisingly important role in speech.
Every word we speak begins with controlled airflow. Producing clear sounds and longer phrases requires coordinated breathing, good postural stability, and efficient core control.
Children with differences in muscle tone, body awareness, or coordination may have to work much harder to maintain the physical stability needed for communication. Sometimes improving those foundational systems helps make speech itself less demanding.
Again, it comes back to supporting the whole system…. not just the mouth.
Why Our Therapy Sessions May Look Different
Parents are often surprised by the variety of activities included during a visit.
One child may spend time balancing while tracking a target with their eyes. Another may complete coordination exercises while receiving vibration or other sensory input. Another may work on visual skills before transitioning into movement-based activities.
To someone unfamiliar with functional neurology, these activities can seem unrelated.
To the brain, they’re all information.
Our goal isn’t to have children perform random exercises. Every activity is chosen based on that individual’s examination findings and designed to provide specific sensory or motor input to the nervous system.
Because every child’s nervous system is unique, every treatment plan is unique as well.
Looking Beyond the Diagnosis
Two children with the same diagnosis may have completely different strengths and challenges.
One child may struggle primarily with motor planning. Another may have differences in sensory processing. Another may demonstrate retained primitive reflexes, visual challenges, or balance deficits that influence how efficiently their brain processes information.
Rather than building treatment around a diagnosis alone, we focus on understanding how that child’s nervous system functions.
This individualized approach helps us identify opportunities to support development in ways that make sense for that specific child.
Communication Begins with Connection
One of the most important things we hope families take away is that communication is about far more than spoken words.
Every child deserves the opportunity to connect with the people around them, whether that communication happens through speech, gestures, facial expressions, sign language, or an augmentative communication device.
Our role is not to force communication. Our role is to better understand the nervous system, identify opportunities to support its function, and help create an environment where communication can become easier.
Because when we look beyond words, we often discover something incredibly important:
