Why the ADHD behaviors you see often start long before symptoms appear
When parents hear “ADHD,” they picture focus issues, impulsivity, big emotions, or trouble sitting still. But underneath those symptoms is a deeper story, one that begins in early development, long before a child walks into a classroom or struggles with homework.
That story lives in two places most parents have never been told to look:
primitive reflexes and sensory processing.

Primitive reflexes are automatic survival movements babies are born with. They help infants roll, crawl, feed, orient to sound, and develop early brain connections. As a child grows, these reflexes are supposed to integrate, meaning the higher brain takes over.

- The Moro Reflex → constant fight-or-flight, emotional reactivity, anxiety, sensory overload
- ATNR → difficulty reading across a page, handwriting problems, losing place, poor copying from the board
- STNR → fidgeting, poor posture, trouble sitting still, difficulty shifting between tasks
- TLR → poor balance, low tone, trouble with spatial awareness
- Spinal Galant → wiggling, bouncing, sensitivity to clothing, constant movement
- FPR → freeze responses, shutdowns, rapid overwhelm
These reflexes create behaviors that look exactly like ADHD, but the root is neurological, not behavioral.
A child may be labeled as inattentive when in reality, they’re fighting a reflex that’s pulling their body into motion.
They may be seen as impulsive when their nervous system is stuck in survival mode.
They may be seen as clumsy when their brain-body map hasn’t fully integrated.
Reflexes are the hidden key, and the missing link in many ADHD evaluations.
Sensory Processing: The Brain’s Filter System

A child with sensory processing challenges may:
- Overreact to noise or crowds

- Struggle to follow directions when overstimulated
The nervous system becomes overloaded, and the child slips into fight, flight, or freeze, the very states that mimic ADHD.
